I Am... Friday Links: 12.19.2014

Woah! Christmas is coming up fast! It's the last Friday before the big day – are you guys ready? It's just me and Mike in Tokyo so we're planning on a DIY takoyaki party on Christmas Eve and a traditional Japanese Christmas dinner of KFC and a potato salad tree. It's pretty Christmas-y over here – there are countless illuminations (Christmas light displays) and almost all the stores blast Christmas music 24/7. Last Sunday we wandered around Ginza, a glitzy shopping street full of luxury shops and fancy department stores. On Sundays they close the main street so it's pedestrian only, making it perfect for window shopping or grabbing a snack and people watching.

I Am... Sweet Side Dish: Holiday Quinoa Recipe

For me, it's always about the sides. I could make a meal out of side dishes and to be honest, I have, many times. This Christmas quinoa salad has what I think of as wintertime flavours: dried cranberries, crispy crunchy pears, toasted pecans, and oranges. It comes together quickly and is a perfect light and fresh counterpoint to all the hot dishes that are at the table at Christmas.

I Am... Party in a Jar: Mini Sriracha Chicken Pot Pies Recipe

If you're a fan of food blogs and you don't live under a rock, you probably know Molly, the gorgeously happy voice behind My Name is Yeh. I had the pleasure of meeting Molly (and being her date!) in real life at Saveur's Best Food Blog Awards and let me tell you, she's just as sunshiny and friendly in real life as she is online.

I Am... Rice Cooker Pancake

If you wander around Tokyo, you'll start to notice random line ups outside restaurants. People might be politely queuing for that ultimate bowl of ramen, a bag of artisanal popcorn, or (and this is the most likely) a plate of pancakes. Pancakes are extremely popular. So popular that on any given day you're bound to come across a crazy long line of girls (it's always girls, with maybe a boyfriend or two thrown in) patiently waiting for pancakes. But why wait when you can make a rice cooker pancake right at home?!

I Am... Vegan(!) Creamy Corn Soup Recipe

I'm a huge soup fan. Chunky, smooth, creamy, or noodle-y, come wintertime, I want all the soups, all the time. Thankfully, not all soups take hours to make. This corn soup, thickened with a bit of tofu and seasoned with sweet and mellow white miso, is a fast favorite once the temperature starts to dip.

I am so incredibly obsessed with Tokyo's pastry game. It seems like everywhere I go I see something I want to eat. The cake above, Sadaharu Aoki's Matcha Adzuki has delicious layers of matcha buttercream, dark chocolate genoise, adzuki beans, and a crispy-crunchy praline base. Seriously heaven. If I had the tummy space I'm pretty sure I'd eat my weight in pastries.

I Am... Matcha Coconut Macaroons Recipe: Holiday Cookies with a Twist

Christmas time means cookies and around these parts, Christmas cookies most definitely mean macaroons. No, I don't mean those delicate, finicky French macaron – I mean crisp and coconutty haystacks. A good coconut macaroon is a delicious thing: mounded, crisp and crunchy outsides and soft chewy insides. I'm a huge fan of macaroons, especially when they're homemade.

I Am... Bun Bo Hue Recipe: The Spicy Vietnamese Noodle Soup You Never Knew You Loved

Any good cook will tell you that soups are a labour of love. Generally, they take time and a little bit of effort, but like any thing that is worth waiting for, they are absolutely heartwarming. Soups, especially noodle soups, are my go to bowl of comfort. I love the combination of textures (solid and liquid, squishy and firm), the slurping, the messiness, the fun, the satisfaction.

I Am... Sunday Brunch: Holiday Gingerbread Cardamom Waffles Recipe

These waffles are what I imagine Christmas morning tastes like. Usually our family Christmas brunches are more of the dim sum variety, but if I ever were to branch out and have a cozy Christmas morning, just Mike and I, I'd love to spend a lazy time eating gingerbread cardamom waffles with vanilla buttermilk syrup and plenty of crispy bacon.

It's full on Christmas decorations and music over here in Tokyo. I can't wait to buy myself a traditional Christmas cake! Apparently, they celebrate Christmas by eating fried chicken (preferably from KFC) and having a strawberries and cream Christmas cake for dessert. Christmas cake is definitely something I can get down with!

I Am... Grilled Cheese Recipes: Sandwiches for the Holiday Season!

I find December incredibly hectic, more so than any other month. There are always a bunch of things I'm forever falling behind on, so I always remind myself to take a break when I need it because when I get stressed, I go a little crazy. Whenever I feel like I need a pick me up I make a grilled cheese, because: grilled cheese. There's nothing more relaxing than biting into a crispy, crunchy sandwich and watching the snow softly fall outside the window. Don't forget to slow down and take some time to make yourself (and your loved ones!) a grilled cheese this season. Heck, make yourself two – you deserve it!
