I Am... Beef and Guinness Pie Recipe
Happy St. Patrick's Day! I don't usually celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but this year I thought I'd make something Irish themed. After all, I'm quite fond of Ireland–we share a love of potatoes. I was thinking of an Irish potato recipe, but when Mike suggested Guinness pie, I had to go for it. Guinness pie is a beef stew topped with a puff pastry topping. Puff pastry and beef stew? I'm totally in!

Sometimes, with all the imported fruits and vegetables we get nowadays, it's hard to remember that produce has seasons. But whenever I see asparagus popping up at the store I know that spring is on it's way. I love the bright green flavour of asparagus. It tastes just like spring. Asparagus is fantastic simply cooked with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, but if you want to get really fancy, there are so many ways to dress it up.

Arugula is one of my top choices in greens for a salad. Those nutty, peppery leaves are so addictive that sometimes I'll just grab a handful to snack on. Still, not everyone has the same unabashed love for arugula. I haven't tried this, but I don't think that plopping down a bowl of undressed arugula at my next dinner party will elicit the same amount of enthusiasm as, say…a bowl of papaya pear arugula salad.

Fish tacos will forever remind me of living in Mexico. The endless white sand beaches, the cerulean ocean, and the hot, hot heat. It was so hot that we hardly ever ventured out during the day. Instead we stayed inside the artificial cool of our condo, not wanting to brave the weather.

I definitely have a thing for textures when it comes to food. Contrasting textures, especially in the same dish, really do it for me. When something crunchy is next to something soft, or smooth, the crunchiness is just so much more…crunchy. Dolsot bibimbap is one of the dishes that does an excellent job of pairing the crunchy with the not-so-crunchy.

I visited Rome for the first time last November. As excited as I was to see the Colosseum, Pantheon and Sistine Chapel, I was even more excited to try real Roman food. We had sit-down dinners every night, but I especially loved the Roman street food. I have a thing for hand held food and Rome has an abundance of it: fragrant, hot roasted chestnuts; intensely flavoured, smooth gelato; and crispy pizza à taglio.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't like deep-fried food. There's something about the crunch of something that's been deep-fried that makes it so satisfying. These shrimp taquitos have both an incredibly satisfying crunch and a light freshness-imagine your favourite shrimp taco wrapped up in a freshly fried rolled tortilla chip.

I have an obsession with breakfasts foods, and by extension, brunch. I love eating breakfast foods anytime and all the time. This makes brunch an especially exciting meal for me–seeing people devour breakfast foods after 12 pm makes me happy.

This has got to be the easiest pulled pork recipe ever. Honestly, it's no fuss, no muss, it's almost not even a recipe at all. I wasn't really a big fan of pulled pork until I tasted this one. It's pillowy soft and melts in your mouth like delicious pork cotton candy. Most of the pulled porks I've tried are drenched in sauce, which, while good, kind of masks the flavour of the pork. This pulled pork recipe uses only sugar and salt, so the end result is a touch salty, a tiny bit sweet and oh-so-porky.

I was out having dinner with my friend Minna tonight at a local hipster sushi bar when I suddenly had a intense craving for raw, crunchy seaweed. There was a definite need for something spicy, salty, and seaweed-y between our copious orders of raw fish and beer. Unfortunately for me, nothing on the menu fit the bill, so as soon as dinner was over, I got to work on satisfying my primal seavegetable urges.

Are you ever in a restaurant, deep in scintillating conversation when a fabulous plate of food passes by on the way to another table? Suddenly, you forget just what fascinating tidbit your table-mate was telling you. They might have been talking about their brand-new wiener dog puppy or how they just got tickets to a sold out show, but all you can think about is the plate. Thoughts fly through your head: what is it, where is it, I want it!
